CRAU?: Nope!
History: The wiki entry for Coran is basically non-existent, so to start things off...
Some 10,000 years ago, Altea was a peaceful planet with one of the greatest weapons known to the universe, Voltron. The King and his Paladins promoted peace and unity, and Altea thrived from its many peaceful ties throughout various galaxies. That was the world that Coran grew up in. The grandson of the architect of the castle of lions, he was always near the royal family of Altea, and when he grew older and sharpened his skills and mind through the Altean military and eventually as a royal adviser, he found himself more or less a part of the royal family. He was one of King Alfor's confidants, and if you asked him, he'd say he has a bond that's more like an uncle than an adviser to King Alfor's daughter, the Princess Allura.
But peace wasn't meant to last. The leader of the paladins turned, breaking apart Voltron and eventually trying to claim the lions by force, to use their power to rule the universe, rather than protect it. The war ravaged both their people and their planet, and the in the end Alfor was forced to make the ultimate sacrifice. He placed his daughter in a cryo-pod after tying the life force of the lions of Voltron to her, hoping she would wake up in a better time, a time far beyond the war. And as someone Alfor trusted with his daughter's safe keeping, Coran joined her just moments later.
The next thing he knew, he was falling out of a cryo-pod 10,000 years later, faced with truly strange looking creatures who would eventually be known to him as the newest paladins of Voltron. Altea was long since destroyed, their people wiped out, and Zarkon had conquered almost all of the known universe, but Coran and Allura are strong and stubborn, and with the lions behind them, they set out to fight back and free the planets under Zarkon's horrible rule.
Which is where the series really kicks in.
Personality: Coran is the very definition of an absent minded genius. As a mechanical engineer and helmsman of the Castle of Lions, his intelligence and ability to come up with technical solutions to problems is matched only by that of the Green Paladin, Pidge. He's clever, despite his somewhat distracted way of going about things, and he shows this constantly through random tangents on the systems of the castle, historical anecdotes of planets their flying past, and the occasional story from his past.
However, Coran's intelligence... isn't exactly obvious. See, Coran doesn't exactly act like an intellectual. Instead, he acts like a "mad uncle" of sorts, overreacting to even the simplest situation, yelling absurdities and dancing around like he doesn't care who's watching. Even in the midst of castle repairs or reading reports at the helm, he tends to keep this humor at the forefront of his actions, dismissing tense situations with silly stories and actions, turning even situations of danger into something a little more casual and easy to handle. You see, Coran's worked as an adviser to the royal family of Altea for many long years, and in that time he has learned that sometimes the best way to ease the pressure rulers face, is to make sure they crack a smile, that they can take a breath, that the pressure isn't a constant force.
Now, it's probably good to note that his tendency towards levity isn't all a ruse meant to relax those he's around. Oh no, not at all. The man may well and truly be considered insane. See, his plans may work out, and his mechanical work may keep the castle running, but the way he goes about things is... a bit unorthodox. Have the paladins stand in the equivalent of a giant laser bomb chamber holding mirrors to try and get a wormhole working? Perfectly acceptable! Dress everyone up like fearsome space pirates to visit a clearly non-threatening swap mall? Only the best idea imaginable! Pull out a previously made paladin costume to try and woo the red lion during a crisis? DON'T WORRY, HE'S GOT THIS.
On the other hand, Coran is more than able to keep his mind in a crisis. When humor and distraction will be more a detriment than anything, he is able to buckle down and perform his work to the best of his ability. As Allura's adviser (and the only other surviving member of her race), Coran has been sure to be there for the Princess whenever he can. Be that as the creator of a smile, a shoulder to lean on, or the steady hand on her shoulder, reassuring her that what they're doing will work. See, Coran has a rather large heart. He's relatively quick to warm up to and connect with others, something his cheery personality and silly nature seem to help with, but he's also fiercely loyal.
Coran will do anything for Allura and the Paladins, and while he may not ever be in the thick of combat like the others, he does what he can with the functions of the castle, with the little behind the scenes things that allow team Voltron to function as they do. He keeps track of their nutrition needs, programs their training, plots most of their courses, and is always there as a steady voice during their battles. While the Paladins rush off into the thick of it, sometimes with Allura hot on their tails, Coran is always there at the helm of the Castle of Lions, keeping track of everything and offering both a sturdy foundation to their communications and a calming voice when needed.
Skills/Abilities:
Alien Physiology
As an Altean, Coran has slightly enhanced strength (although considering he's not exactly the most battle ready, he probably can't bend metal with his bare hands like Allura) as well as minor shapeshifting abilities. In canon, the extent of this shapeshifting has been changing skin tone and height, but they do say that the Alteans use this ability to try and fit in with other races for diplomatic missions, so it's possible it could go further than small cosmetic changes.
The Coranic
Coran is, despite all appearances, the chief mechanical engineer of team Voltron. He runs, modifies, and fixes all the systems of the Castle of Lions, and also knows a thing or two about creative solutions to strange and uncommon mechanical problems. He may be a bit unconventional about it, but Coran definitely knows his stuff when it comes to engineering, robotics, and nano-technology.
Military Backing
Coran was once a part of the Altean military, often times telling stories of when he was a cadet, and even once mentioning that he was a part of the aeronautics sub-tech nano-weaponry unit. As such, it's safe to say that he knows a thing or two about strategy and weaponry, even if he doesn't necessarily assume an offensive role throughout the series.
Network Sample:
[The video flicks on to a somewhat frazzled looking man with bright blue cheek tattoos, a killer mustache, and-- wait. Are those elf ears?!]
Right. Well. I can't say that being sucked through a magic portal and ending up in another world is something I have experience with. Interdimensional travel is usually a bit trickier where I come from-- and results in a lot more things trying to shoot at you than people apologizing for a spell gone rogue.
[He breathes in, and despite the cheer he's trying to force into his voice, it's pretty obvious that he's a little... stressed.]
My name is Coran of the Castle of Lions, and I'm looking for the other members of Voltron. If anyone knows that name, contact me immediately.
[He lets out a little breath, and manages to crack a bit of a smile.]
Otherwise, keep an eye out for a giant robot and a bunch of large, colorful lions!
